Sorry, it doesn't work that way
You're being a bit glib in thinking that the almost infinite brain power that is the computer industry would overlook such a simple solution. Sorry, one more layer wont help. In fact, most CPU's already have several layers of interconnects. Last year's rendition of the Athlon XP Throughbread core upped it's level to nine. The big problem here is the exponential growth in complexity you introduce when upping metal layers. Also, CPU dies emit a downright nastly amount of heat. With the fan removed and without any overheating failsafes, most any CPU will heat up to about 700 degrees Farenheight in about 6 seconds. CPUs desperately need all the surface area they can get. If you can make a cubic CPU the sucker would put off so much heat and have so little relative surface area for it's volume the poor sucker would explode even if it sat in a bath of liquid nitrogen.
