You are correct. The real problem is the decline of the PC industry. The only thing that made every next generation of chip cheaper and faster, was increasing volume. Those days are gone forever. Intel already has problems even now with little or no hope of high volume Itanium usage. That chip will never see mainstream use, and Intel will probably never break even on it. Mostly what Intel is doing now is concentrating on making the P4's cheaper.

The only way to pay for $B fabs is by selling more and more chips. But it is now going the other way. Volume is falling. No one needs an Itanium PC to send email, and that is what the majority of PC users are doing today.

The economic problem is far more difficult to solve than the technology problem. The PC revolution, at least this phase of it, is mature.
