Because that was what John L. Ries comment was referring to ...
"It has gone a long way toward transforming HP from a high-end computer manufacturer into low-end PC one." - John L. Ries critique of the merger.

Those 'high end computers' he is referring to are Unix workstations which are dead meat these days. My point was that if they wanted to remain in the computer business, they had to merge with another player in order to compete with Dell. Just staying in the printer business would have carried its own risks due to lack of diversification. This way they play the PC market both on the Windows side and on the Linux side.
