HIS OPINION is that the HP/Compaq merger was a failure?
That is how it appears from the direct quote. And if that is the case, his opinion simply and obviously flies in the face of reality. Everybody indeed has a right to their opinion, but when their opinion is ludicrous, they usually end up eating crow. For someone of Michael Dell's stature to make a rash statement like this is rather disturbing. If he is making business decisions on this 'opinion', I really wouldn't want to own stock in Dell right now. Clearly the recently merged HP/Compaq (#2 after Dell) pose an increased risk to Dell going forward as will the Lenovo combination, and Michael Dell is discounting that competitive threat based on his 'opinion'. Plenty of people build great companies and then destroy them based on a faultering business plan. Hopefully Michael Dell reconsiders his blanket statement on mergers. The rest of what he has to say is hard to fault.
