3% is just a guess by IDC ...
Since most Linux desktop users download their ISOs or buy downloaded CD's, there are no reliable measurements for Linux marketshare. It is that simple. Yet organizations like IDC are trying to predict the market based on traditional sales numbers because they are at a loss for any other method of discovery and they have to come up with something. The truth is that nobody has a clue as to what Linux desktop marketshare really is or where it is headed. It used to be that way with the server market as well until enterprise usage ticked up and triggered a growing number of up front, revenue generating sales. But the underlying software is getting better and better and as time passes, more and more users are finding that they can make do with the free download editions that leave no trace on the sales indicators.
