x86 is LARGELY
IRRELEVANT for server platorms even their 64-bit versions. The problem is the ISA itself which has been tantalizing people for decades. Doesn't matter what's the clock speed or the fact that the unwieldy x86 became 64-bit. These are short term fixes that wont hold beyond 2-3 years. Unfortunately, AMD which is a much better processor than pentiums/xeons, etc. is doomed for the same reasons.

Power5 and Itanium-2 are the powerhorses. It also appears that Power5 is the main one, since Intel is having very hard and lengthy time deciding to commit the resources that are necessary to take Itanium-2 to the next level.

Ultasparcs have a performance drawback which could be solved or sidestepped with the proper memory design. It is clear though that strong competition from a 3rd vendor is more pressure to keep improving Power5 and Itanium-2 and it is thus very necessary. I hope that the Niagara will be good competition.
