Our customers seem to be using more and more linux and less and less unix, but not in such critical areas. I think it was easy for an IT manager to rejuvinate an old Wintel box by loading linux and having it do some non-critical job on the off chance that they could save some money by not buying a new SPARC somewhere. In doing that, many found that linux worked just fine and that got the Unix-savy IT people thinking COST SAVINGS!
Windows IT people who don't have any Unix background were not so willing to take a chance. In any case, they already had a Windows server for the role and it was already running on some inexpensive Intel hardware.
At the end of the day, the group most likely to use linux is the group already using Unix. That has incrementally weakened Unix companies, particularly Sun, and allowed Microsoft to close various gaps in performance and functionality between the Windows server versions and the upscale Unix version. Linux may threaten Microsoft in some ways, but it also helps them a lot in other ways. - Posted by: StorageGuru Posted on: 11/30/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
