The Compaq culture was vastly diferent than HP's
(and DEC's and Tandem's). Compaq was a company
devoted to a single thing: cheap PCs. (Yes, I
mean "cheap" and not "inexpensive".) It was also
a very hierarchical company where jockying for
power, position, and prestige seemed to be the
main goal of many of the employees.

HP, DEC, and Tandem, by comparison, were technology-
driven companies that each had a long history of
making significant contributions to the computer
industry (and, for HP, contributions to the
entire electronics industry).

We would have all been far better served if HP had
directly absorbed DEC and Tandem *WITHOUT* having
them first pass through Compaq's bowels.
