They pronounce aluminium that way because America is pretty much the only country that pronounces it alu-min-um. The proper term *is* alimunium. I have heard that Aluminum was a brand name used by Alcoa around the turn of the century and it stuck (it was aluminium in American dictionaries for nearly a century).

In 1990 it was standardized internationally (including US) by the IUPAC as aulminium.

(I had to put up with British friends correcting me on the pronunciation all the time so I finally researched it to see what was right)
