You sure it was the Power5 chip ???
It is my recollection that AMD's Athlon and Opteron were based on the DEC Alpha design and not the Power5 which explains the EV bus interface.

I believe that many of the engineers working on the Athlon and Opteron lines are former Alpha designers.
