Alpha was done in by Compaq; MS didn't drop support for NT-Alpha until Compaq did. Furthermore, it was Compaq that decided to phase out the technology in favor of Itanium and then decided to sell out to HP, which has no interest in promoting an architecture developed elsewhere. Alpha never threatened to dominate, but it had a comfortable niche at the high end of computing. Its demise is entirely the fault of its owners.

In this case, Intel has been tirelessly promoting IA64 for 10+ years, has had a dominant position in the microprocessor market for 20, still get's snubbed by longtime partner MS, and is in danger of having the architecture completely eclipsed by
AMD64.

The more appropriate comparison is with the IBM PS/2 and the OS MS and IBM developed for it: OS/2.
