Marginalized with no compelling value
Sun is a good company in a poor situation. It has been marginalized on both the high-end and mid-range Unix server business, and has failed to gain any traction against Dell and HP in the x86 low-end server environment. Linux is steadily eating into the proprietary Unix market share, and Sun is just not sure what to do about it.
Add to that Sun has a very high set of support costs (TCO is not reasonable). They still attempt to gouge the customer on many proprietary components even when the base system price is competitive.

MacNealy doesn't have a strategy, other than to slowly reduce internal costs which is also devastating employee morale and productivity inside Sun. It's a sad thing ...
