The decision of the market to stay in the x86-compatible camp was made by developers and customers.

If AMD made its own new IS to compete with EPIC, it would fail. No one wants to rebuild their software, and emulation won't do. (For now.)

AMD knew this, and that's why they're winning the 64-bit desktop/low-/mid-range server wars.
