There was also a patch for Win95...
with an AMD K6/II or better processor running faster than 233MHz. It would cause Windows to sometimes fail on boot. The faster the processor was, the more often it failed. You had to boot into safe mode to load the patch if your system was really fast and could not boot at all.

If your system was really, really fast, you had to go into the BIOS and slow down the processor, load the patch then reset the BIOS.

This patch and the one you mentioned are the only two patches per se that I know of but...

There has also been issues with running WinXP SP1 on AthlonXP without loading the PowerNow! utility. On the original WinXP, the problem wasn't there. On SP1 with some systems, they either would not go into suspend or would not come out. THis problem is solved by either updating to SP2 or loading the PowerNow! utilities.

Now a utility is not the same as a patch but if loading the utility gets rid of the problem then it does 'patch' a known issue. There are at least two other Win32 issues that are 'patched' by loading the appropriate AMD utilities and updates or by 'patching' Win32 with their latest fixes.

...Even if they are not officially 'patches'. THe point is, they are not flaws in the CPU or chip design. Neither are the PS, RAM, cooling, etc. which, yes, I've come across.

Speaking of cooling, there was a line of the Athlon, I think it was the Athlon4 or the Athlon Mobile but with Win2kSP2 and without the PowerNow! utilities, tended to overheat and send a shutdown signal to Windows. SP3 or the utility stopped this issue.

Apparently, a 'fix' in SP2 caused the procesor to continue to run at full power (by sending ack requests or something to it) all the time. On boxes with good cooling systems, this was never noticed but just upgrading to SP3 or loading the utility stopped it without requiring better cooling (since bth these actions resulted in Windows behaving as it should).
