Your post would be more credible IF
You also need to state what you were using for:
Power supply - how many watts and whose?
Amount of cooling.
Memmory - whose, how much, how many sticks.
Whose motherboard.
What bios release.
What video and sound card, placed in which PCI slots for the sound card. What size AGP memory apature are you using. What AGP speed are you setting for in your BIOS.

These are all things that cause a flaky system - along with of course a bad Windows or Linux install.....
