Is Dell fooling themselves?
...Or is Dell fooling himself?

Dell may always lead in the consumer market for one reasons: they are as obiquitous as Intel itself. When you ask a consumer what chip they want, they say Intel. Ask them what computer they want they say Dell. Ask them why they say they're the best. Ask them what makes them the best they say everyone wants one. Circular reasoning but it works for the consumer.

Ask the prosumer and they will tell you that the AMD chip is the best and they will never get a Dell if only because they don't sell AMD. (There are other reasons but if you're not selling AMD the rest is mute).

The corporate world is asking for AMD. IBM has told me so and they are now offering Opterons. Likewise, HP has told me so and will also offer Opterons. Best-of-Breed shops will always offer AMD chips of every level because their clients demand it. Why does Dell say, "We still don't see a strong demand from our customers"? Because their customers don't expect it from Dell.

Why do people see Dell as "a company that devotes resources to shaving seconds off the length of time it takes a factory worker to pull parts out of a bin?" Because that is the reason they stick to Intel CPU's on Intel motherboards.

The fact is, my company that has a contract with Dell no longer buys Dells. Why? Because when we got 12 Dell laptops stolen from our sales force and had to replace them immediately, Dell said that they will ship them for delivery next business morning, right after the seven business days it takes before they are ready to ship.

That's right. At least eight business days to get a Dell laptop. We hung up the phone, called CDW, ordered 12 Compaq Laptops and had them the same day (in our Chicago office. Our ATL office would have been the next business day).

We now purchase strickly through CDW off of our HP Contract for all servers, desktops and notebooks and printers for better (meaning faster CPU's & HDD's, more RAM, etc) systems at lower prices and faster delivery with the same ease of management.

Who is Dell fooling? Not us.
