The main difference between now and 20 years ago is that you don't have to market your games/applications yourself. There was no way to get a game out to the community. There were plenty of 'whiz' kids back in the day and to be quite honest the programming that the new generation has to deal with is so much easier than the crap the previous generation had to put up with.
