In a global economic crisis, programming skills will be the last skill someone needs. Of course it depends on how you define "crisis".

Programmers - the good, the bad, and the ugly - are a dime a dozen. It's one of the many reasons I left the field after the turn of the century.

I'd place more value on one's ability to grow food, barter, and adapt to a variety of conditions and types of employment.
