Buying trouble.
Okay, so HP buys Compaq. What for?
They can lay people off and call it economies of scale, though 'twould be simpler for them to wait until Compaq or Gateway or some other company died and increase production to gain share from orphaned buyers. In the pc market now, is there some minimum level required so that HP had to buy increased sales all at once?

The only good news from all this is knowing that the type of devices with the increase, the type corporations want to buy most, come primarily with Microsoft software. The Win95 kernel will disappear that much faster.
And, before you say it, yes, I know the type of software application which is also most likely to increase in sales: security. In fact, maybe part of the reason for the new purchases is the upgrade to SP2. Security sells, and I'm sure Microsoft is grateful.
