Maybe stress + manufacturing tolerance is the cause
I would be surprised if Dell didn't destructively test a number of units with environmental chambers and so on.
In manufacturing there are always unseen issues that crop up later. Batteries die earlier that expected, power supplies don't last as long as predicted.
The main reason in the power supply stakes is probably the fact that once upon a time, power supplies were hugely over-specified for a task, making them very very reliable.
Remember those old 286s that were built like a tank, and never ever broke down.
In todays uber-cost-cutting world, if a car manufacturer finds a component that lasts longer than it's predicted design life, then it redesigns the component!
I can't help thinking that environmentally the trend is bad, although we all like the movie making capabilites of a 2.x GHz pentium over an old 20 MHz 386 that couldn't play an MP3 file.
