well actually I've always liked dell, but
I recommended them to many people and have personally purchased three brand new ones.

I was given an OptiPlex Pentium GXi 200 for free recently, which is sat here on my desk running FreeBSD. Apart from a crappy BIOS, the hardware of the Optiplex is marvellous, very easy to take apart and replace things.

I've also bought many professionally, and used many that others have bought.

But recently I recommended a low end Dell for a friend, and it works great. The only really terrible thing about it is that it has Intel 845GL graphics built in, which is the same as Dell supply on low end laptops. BUT here is the horrible thing: NO AGP connector. The holes are on the board, but to save the $0.20, they haven't soldered a connector on the board!!!! This is just really really crummy. I felt really embarrased that, if he'd wanted to, he couldn't move his Geforce2 over from his old 1GHz system to his new 2.7GHz system. That was just nasty.
