Pragmatic reasons for reaching the planets
We have now turned the planet into one active ecological pool with no isolated islands of refuge. We have transplanted killer bees beyond the reach of their natural predators, brought them to laboratories on other continents, and then accidentally let them escape. We have crossed the barriers separating species, and introduced new diseases into the human population (e.g., SARS), and let them incubate around the world.

It is true that colonization of the planets may be a long, long way off. But the clock is ticking on us. It may take 100 to 200 years to get practical migration to the planets. Within that time, a lot of wars, epidemics, and famines will break out. There are a lot of different ways to cap the history of our species.

The reality is, if we don't pay attention to making interplanetary travel real, everything else will get in the way until we don't have a chance to try it out.
