Monuments
In ancient times, the wealthy built monuments of stone. During the Renaissance, the wealthy supported great artists to create monuments in paint and sculpture. More recently, the wealthy have supported composers who created "monuments" in music.

In the 20th century, the wealthy sponsored the pioneers of flight, gaining immortality in the record books. For instance, Howard Hughes will be remembered not for his senile insanity but for his aviation genius.

Allen, Ansari, Bezos, Carmack (nice alphabet), and the rest are following in a literally age-old tradition of putting private wealth to creating "monuments" beyond the reach of the rest of us.
