Population densities
Europe is denser.

Population density of the continents:

North America - 32 people/mi2
South America - 73 people/mi2
Europe - 134 people/mi2
Asia - 203 people/mi2
Africa - 65 people/mi2
Australia and Oceania - 9 people/mi2

Not that I think it's a meaningful statistic anyway. 1) Different cultures with different lifestyles don't use space the same way. 2) Overpopulation continues to be a myth, as witnessed by food production relative to population, and concentrations of populations.

I do agree that the fabs would ideally be farther apart, if indeed they are within 50 miles. There may be efficiencies from proximity, but also the potential for disasters within that range should be a consideration. I.e. it's not a Pacific rim situation, but you have to think of the potential of an earthquake taking down both my fabs with one tremor.
