Wonder how this compares to the "Big Mac"...
"super computer" clusters that have recently been built on the relative cheap?

A "basic" dual G5 XServe (2GHz advertised but apparently higher is available) costs $4,000 (a custom build, "full blown" costs $6,700).

A dual G5 (2.5GHz) tower costs $3,000.

No mention of the Opteron (and other) Cray specs but on a straight forward cpu comparison, to match the 12 Opteron processors...
6 dual XServes = $24,000 basic (or $40,200 custom)
6 dual G5s = $18,000

(all running UNIX-based OSX, which is nothing to sneeze at happy )

vs the Cray @ $50,000

An early version "Big Mac" (Virginia Tech, about a year ago) rated 3rd fastest in the world. Funny there's no mention in the article of the G5 "super computers"...

It will be interesting to see the Cray specs for comparison.
