They're already here
They're called component connections. Every HDTV has at least one set of them, any decent DVD player has them, every HD cable box has them, HD satellite boxes have them, plenty of receivers have them so you can do video switching if you want, just check bandwith though, not all receivers can transport a full HD stream.

VCR's don't have them, but then they're not HD are they. But you can still hook it up via S-video. But what about D-VHS recorders? OK, you got me there they use firewire.
