Poor reporting???
First, there was NO TECHNICAL reason digital was required for HDTV, it's simply what Congress mandated. (Japan's HDTV was all analog.)

Second, there is no reason what-so-ever that HDTV can't be a standard CRT instead of over priced and problematic flat screens. (Problematic in that the burned out or stuck pixel is still a HUGE issue.)

You know, I can't help but think about "digital watches" and how they were such a fad until people realized that's all it was.

Imagine if flat screens were the norm and someone just invented the CRT. What claims could it make? Well, they last 2 or 3 times longer, they never have a burned or stuck pixel, they have a much higher contrast ratio, they have a MUCH wider viewing angle, they are MUCH brighter and aren't washed out by ambient light. Hmmm, in fact they are superior in just about every measurable way.

Oh well, don't let facts get in the way of your jumping on the band wagon...
