I think, what makes AIX is actually the perimeter technology surrounding a core OS. So far, the core has been a slightly modified SysV code or some other similar Unix (licensed from SCO and such). Now, IBM can just port all their projects to run on Linux. JFS is a very popular example.

And depending on how they latch them onto Linux, they wouldn't have to GPL their contributions.

As I see it, they aren't just dropping a whole lot of R&D by moving to Linux, they are just replacing a small, externally licensed but important piece with Linux.
