Information is a corporate resource, while much of its processing is a utility. There have been tremendous strides made in the last decade, automating information processing along functional lines. And while this effort is undoubtedly ongoing in certain business sectors, there is a large parallel effort to consolidate the gains by implementing portals, clustering servers, incorporating network storage, standardizing on the operating system and other efforts to lower the cost and improve the reliability of the information delivery system.

Mssrs Advani and Raikes can certainly point to anecdotal examples of firms such as Wal-Mart that are making strategic use of IT to gain competitive advantage, but I wonder if they could come up with 10 examples? The key here is strategic; the firm defines a specific area in which innovative IT has a place and makes the appropriate investment. In my opinion, the old assumption that adopting the latest and greatest technology will benefit the business no longer applies.

I see IT spending to be at least 60% defensive, and that number might well be 80-85%. Advantage, Carr.
