People confuse cause with effect when they understand neither. To many a "computer" is some mysterious thing that conjurs up answers to questions that they never thought to ask. So when they say "the computer says" they are equating the hardware with the results of the software that it is running and not making any distinction.
IT technology has given leading businesses an advantage because those businesses recognized the value of the answers and knew what questions to ask. That is still the case today and newer and newer hardware simply allows for more detailed answers and quicker responses.
