Admitting there's a problem is the first step to recovery
"Intel was forced to announce EM64T earlier than it hoped, because rival Advanced Micro Devices was stealing too much thunder with its own version of the technology, AMD64, which went on sale with the Opteron processor in 2003, [Illuminata analyst Jonathan Eunice] said."

Now Intel should just listen to that statement, chew on it, ponder it, think long and hard about the implications and get to work competing with AMD again. The sooner they give up blaming marketing problems, the economic downturn, or whatever they talk about internally, the sooner they can refocus and provide some real competition for AMD.

Until then, they will continue their slide into becoming the GM of the chip world -- lots of mediocre products sold, shrinking margins, and too much emphasis on the fact that they once ruled the industry.
