Meeting expectations
The initial release of the chip fell short of the expectations set by both HP and Intel.

Once HP got the old DEC Alpha, Itanium (AKA Uranium, well that's what we're calling it anyhow) should have been shelved and replaced. The Alpha was a mature product and beat the Itanium in many tests. Although from what I recall, portions of the Alpha were integrated into the Itanium.

HP is literally giving machines away to some customers, partially due to the impending sunset of PARISC.

Here is the kicker for our UNIX environment. Nobody really wants to invest more money in HP's technology, because HP-UX 11i v3 hasn't been released, again not meeting the expectation set by HP. HP-UX 11i v3 has the promise of really scaling, thanks again to DEC's 10 year old technology being infused into HP-UX (advfs, I/O subsystem, single system image clustering, ..etc). We were quite happy to hear of all the features and have been disappointed by the lack of delivery and the confusion at times as to what will be delivered.

On the Windows side, from what I understand, X86_64 is yielding better performance on things like terminal servers. You have better backwards compatibility, plus better performance.

The performance of x86_64 frankly caught many people by surprise...including me. PowerPC is still going strong, SPARC is more or less dead, and AMD is rising.

Some of my information may be dated as I've been buried for the past year or two, but this is simply my perception. Hopefully Intel and HP will get back on track.
