Unless the hardware handles the multiprocessor
instruction execution negotiations. It is possible that the chip, in the absence of specific instructions from the OS, will have a default behavior allowing Win2kPro/XP to take advantage of the dual core transparently by splitting instruction execution betwix the cores based on a complex (or simple for that matter) algorhythm, passing data across an internal datapath as needed, returning the results to the appropriate register/stack/queue unbeknownst to the OS.

But we are talking WIntel, right? I mean the SMP 2.6 kernel of Linux does recognize dual core processors such as Opteron64 and the Power G4/G5 and take full advantage of them, doesn't it?

Correct us please if I am wrong.
