Beyond Knee-Jerk
Let's take an OBJECTIVE look at this issue of RFIDs.

1. They already exist - Look at the apparatis at the exist of many stores - why does the alarm go off when someone walks out without paying? RFID. Things like the Mobil Speed Pass are examples of customer-side RFID.

2. Inventory Management - Putting these things on pallets and boxes allow retailers to save money on managing their inventory. The next greatest thing since Just-in-time.

3. Government Conspiracy - You need a 2.0 GPA to graduate from college. So where do the 2.0 graduates go to work? The Government! The government is such a large, unwieldly, corrupt, inefficient, and ineffective organization that I can't buy ANY conspiracy theories. Large computer projects (like the one advocated for following people), are NOTORIOUSLY over budget, over timing, and more often then not, DON'T WORK (examples: The last 5 FBI software projects, the Denver airport baggage handling software, FORD Motor Company's "EVEREST" vendor-purchasing software). We are a LONG way from having an all-inclusive, privacy breaking, monitoring "solution". Note: Private industry would have it LONG before the government.

4. RFIDs in living beings - The man that found his long lost (7 years) dog in California (from an implanted RFID)is a good example what this technology can do. I don't know about using humans though - I can see it now, criminals hacking off peoples body parts so they can use the RFID for their own (illegal) use. The camera scanner that identifies people by their faces would be much more effective than using RFIDs - because of the example above.

The long and short of it? RFIDs implanted in people is the CHEAP way of identification, and by no means the "best". This means that it will be mandated . . .
