Hate to tell you this but a computer can cut through tons of data in seconds. Hmmm, why do you suppose all the grocery stores track what customers buy? Especially when you use anything other than cash to pay for it.

Yup, they do it because it is used to build their market and they aren't about to stop collecting this data. If anything, they want more of it...
