you just don't get it.
As much as I despise consoles, that moment is not too far off. Even if GF6800 or x800 can do some amazing things, most PC developers will skip those features since relatively few people have these cards. People developing for next-gen consoles will not have to worry about making the game look decent for people whose hardware doesn't support things like pixel shaders or other things that were introduced only recently.

Like I said above, PCs may be extremely versatile, but relatively few applications outside of gaming justify spending that kind of money on a comp. Even a 350$ Walmart Wonder comp can easily do things such as MS office or web surfing. In early 90s, games were just another reason for upgrading a box. Back then, upgrades produced improvements across the board. Putting in a new stick of ram or a cpu did more than just increase the FPS in the latest game. Applications loaded faster and the HD didn't go into an OS-induced seizure when you opened too many files at once.

While you may be content with PC gaming being pushed into a niche market, I hope you realize that the current budget for a triple-A game is typically in millions of dollars. Few games break even as it is. Don't expect any major developers to stick around if that happens.
