It ain't all about the Megahertz...
>>P4 is and has pretty much always been much faster than Athlon. (disclaimer: I personally use AMD chips)<<

Guess again... When you have a 2.4 GHz AMD chip going head to head, AND SOUNDLY BEATING a 3.6 GHz P4, it just goes to show you that it's NOT all about chip speed. Hence AMD's revised nomanclature for it's product line.

It's been a known fact that Intel lost a LOT of credibility with the P4 chip architecture. They removed tried and true technology that's been around since the 386 days from the P4 and decided that the P4 should handle operations by brute force instead of more elegant techniques that it would seem AMD has improved on over the years.

For what it's worth, AMD has almost always been about producing a better chip. Their 286, 386 and 486 chips were faster than the Intel counterparts. Yes, they've had a few missteps along the way, but as the previous poster mentioned, their Athlon series has gotten them back on track.
