The IT industry mistakenly proceeded...
as though the PC market would never become saturated. Their attempt at planned obsolescence is quickly failing because new software and hardware offer little in the way of real increases in functionality. 5 to 6 year old PC's with 300MHz CPU, 64MB RAM and Windows98 offer all the functionality of todays behemoths accept for maybe hard core gaming. The consumer is tired of paying for blue sky and hot air.

The IT industry is going to have to make some big changes as the IT consumer becomes more educated and aware of the unfounded claims of companies selling fluff and calling it real improvements. Even the 64-bit computing that is upon us will provide the vast majority of users nothing in the way of real functionality.

From a tech's point of view, some of this stuff is awesome. But from the average user's perspective, there is nothing there. And I'm afraid that us techies can't support the Microsofts and Intels of the world.
