Clarification
"the end user" != Microsoft
The 'End User' is the person who authored the 'data', not the author of the NTFS filesystem.
The End User owns the content of the datafile say an MS Word <ocument.
The End User is licensed to use MS Word to author the document and by virtue of usability, is licensed to use the OS that is required to use MS Word to author the document that creates the datafile. The datafile when placed on an NTFS filesystem becomes property of Microsoft except for the content within the datafile. You have to ask for permission to read your document you created.

There are too many clueless people that DO run XP and unprotected causing headaches for people like myself who are asked to clean up their badware. I don't mind fixing the problems because people aren't on 133MHz pentiums anymore but after a couple of hours on the same system to clean it throughly gets tiring.

Don't competely get me wrong. MS's OS's are usable and popular and I don't have a problem supporting them but if your application base isn't tied to the OS, you should consider using a different OS other than Windows.

If you haven't used Expose', you really are missing out. After using it and working with Windows AND Linux, I found that my productivity dropped. Apple's release of Tiger will enhance Expose's tool. Sun has their desktop version of it coming soon and MS's Longhorn seems to boast about having something like it but I'm sure it will fall short of expectations.

The iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and other software packages I mentioned are not free but part of the iLife package put out by Apple for $50. For $50, it's a pretty damn usable suite of sweet software.

That suite is included with a new system purchase.

MS has an army of software authors especially for it's business unit. MS's photo tools and movie tools fall way short of Apple's small militia core of software authors.

If you suggest spending money on those packages, let's compare.
$50 for comparable sound editing software
$50 for comparable DVD authoring software
$99 for comparable movie authoring software
$99 for comparable audio mixing like Garage Band
$80 for ACDsee comparable with iPhoto

$400 Windows comparable to $50 for iLife.

Granted that Apple hardware costs more due to lack of choice but Apple hardware is top quality.

I would spend $130 for Tiger AND $50 for iLife.
I wouldn't spend $200 for a rental to an upgrade for XP Pro.
