Apples and oranges
The link in the previous message points to Polaroid (??) 30GB
MP3 player offered at eCost for some $170. It is almost
impossible to compare this to iPod. There are hundreds of very,
very good reasons why iPod has cornered the market among
MP3 players, both among flash-based, and especially hard-disk
based types. Let's see:
Polaroid PDP 601
- larger and heavier than iPod (wider, twice as thick, almost
twice as heavy);
- much clunkier interface (building playlists, adjusting volume,
navigating takes so many more clicks on the navigation
buttons);
- very clunky buttons, rather shoddy appearance (not an issue
for shoestring budget people who don't care);
- does NOT work with iTunes - only MusicMatch (which is, as
vast majority of people here agree, significantly inferior
application to iTunes);
- does NOT play Mpeg-4 (AAC) files;
- does NOT work properly with Macintosh OS (or Linux, for that
matter);
- No FireWire;
- No Calendar, Address Book, Notepad, games...

Apparently in the MP3 player market, FM tuner, audio recording
etc seem to be not-so-popular features, since the devices that
actually do have them don't sell ANY better than those that don't
have them.

Back on the subject; HP has announced this deal many months
ago; Fiorina actually showed an iPod with HP logo etched on the
back to the audience at a trade show. As iPods have an
obscenely high profit margin for Apple (an insider told me this),
both HP and Apple will still nicely profit from this deal.

This should be a clear winner for both companies. Sony should
be really p*ssed at them - their little Walkman device has very
little chance...
