RE: Interesting...
>I thought I read in other articles that companies like Dell also bid on this project and came way high price wise and way low performance wise. I would think that the "student labor" would also be available for any company that won said bid..would it not?

Good point. There were definitely articles out there that discussed VT's consideration of machines from other vendors and they did go with Apple because they cost less and had greater performance.

The bottom line in any of this is that VT has demonstrated a seriously inexpensive model to gain incredible performance marks. A lot of that is due to the availability of inexpensive 64-bit processors. When Opterons come down and the Athlon64 becomes widely available, I'm sure you'll see similar builds.

Apple, Windows, Linux, IBM, AMD, Intel, whatever... this is good news. The currenlty 3rd fastest supercomputer in the world has been completed for an small fraction of the cost of other supercomputers in its company. If it can be done with Apple/IBM then you better believe Intel and AMD are going to want to demonstrate that it can be done with them as well. Performance is going to continue to get better for cheaper and when that all trickles down to us lowly end-users, we're going to benefit from this.
