RE: EU trying to crush the dollar
You really don't understand the EU. (a) They are not capable of combining in the currency market. The reason the UK is not in the Euro is because when we were in the precursor, and speculators targeted the pound, the French and German central banks tore up the treaty of support and left the pound to fight its own battles.

(b) Since commodities are most traded in dollars, if the dollar goes down, the oil price (which is in dollars) goes up by even more. We pay about $10 per US gallon at the pumps in the UK.

The problem with the US economy is the same as the UK economy, but more so

1) A stupid war that we were dragged in to, which is wasting large amounts of UK money, as well as lives (you are wasting even more of both)

2) Both countries living beyond their means.

And now your government even wants to kill off tourism to the US (a source of foreign currency that you need if the dollar is to recover) by making everyone register in advance on a US government web site where they will keep our details for 15 years. Without this done at least 3 days in advance, you cannot even get on a plane that will touch down in the US, even if it is on its way to somwehere else. Will this solve anything? I doubt it - it now makes the said government web site an even greater target for hackers.

If you believe that the EU is a government like the US is s government, than you are actually quite wrong. Most of its legislation is concerned with the single market - namely that there are no barriers to trade within that trading zone. This includes strict competition laws, and it is these that Microsoft and Intel have fallen foul of. Smarter US companies check the competition laws and comply with them. Takeovers are usually passed by the EU to ensure that a monopoly will not be created, and advice taken on what needs to be done to modify deals to stay within the spirit of the law, as well as the letter of the law.

Microsoft chose to ignore the law, and then ignore the court charged with upholding the law and then ingored the court ruling.
