What is multithreading/tasking?
All three platforms mentioned in the thread (i.e., Intel P4 w/hyperthreading, AMD64 and Power G4) are optimized for multitasking in one way or another. Not so sure about the G4, I'm more familiar with the G5.

Hyperthreading only helps if you are running several different tasks at the same time that use the processor differently. So if your processor is being used to render graphics due to the fact that your VGA doen't do full hardware acceleration, and you are also trying to compute a spreadsheet and spell-check a document at the same time, Then Intel's platform will out perform the rest.

If you are doing any single task multiple times or similar types of multiple tasks then AMD and Power Gx will shine.

Also, what is ment by, "...optimized software--particularly 3D and video rendering"? Do they mean DirectX optimized software?

Then we cannot bring the Power Gx into comparison but if we are talking about OpenGL or if we are talking about using software without DirectX or OpenGL support, I am convinced that 9 times in ten AMD with 3D now will outshine Intel and that Power Gx will outshine AMD.

Can one of you multisystem owners with comparable processors test this theory then TalkBack with results?

Lets try apples with apples. Load gentoo linux on both (all?) systems. Use a customised kernel for each system from a stage one build. Use an nVidia 7200 w/hardware accelerated OpenGL video card. Complie FGFS on each system, fully optimized. Let her rip!

What would you expect?
