Wrong People being sued
The chipmakers had a contract with the MPAA, which they complied with.

The manufacturers of the DVD players did NOT have a contract with the MPAA and did what they wanted with the chips.

Chipmakers are not liable.
DVD player manufacturers *might* be liable ONLY if they agreed to comply with the original MPAA contract.

It's like suing a paper mill for what the newspaper prints on their paper. The paper mill is not liable for the content of the newspaper unless the newspaper buys that particular paper run under a contract to only print specific material. See how silly it is becoming!

You cannot sue a car manufacturer for the drunk driver who uses their car to run over your cat. It's called "degrees of separation."
