Why?
This fight is something I just don't get. So you can tape a movie, is that such a big deal? So you can copy a movie, again is that big deal? Not from what I see.

Besides that all these chips do is allow you bypass region coding and that's not illegal. Maybe against a contract but if you can bypass region coding why not bypass CSS entirely. No need for license to decode then.

They worry about copying so much but seem to forget that all the movies are already there to download. Who needs to copy. Don't they now I can download a movie in about the 10th the time it takes to rip using DeCSS and compress a movie off a DVD. Now add to that that DVD movies are cheap and at worst reasonable in prices for what you get. Next add that collector aspect, people who buy DVDs are collectors. Getting a movie for free means nothing to them. I am one of those types.

Now for all the others who just want to see the movie they will rent it for $1.99 on Tuesday or Thursday. They aren't going to copy it because they watch it once and that's good enough for them. I have friends just like that. They have no desire to watch a movie twice. It will eventually be on TV anyways and Pay per view gets it about the same time as the video rental stores.

So here is the MPAA just wasting money. Seems kind of silly but then this is the industry that thought the VCR was the end of them and we all know how that turned out.
