Ax is right...and it's fun too!
I know the walls of my house are shaking, but I agree with Ax.

There are some issues on the LCD panels that have not been well addressed. I will gran that the panels, ranging from the PC LCD monitors to the 40 inch LCD TV panels are getting much better, but...
there is still the issue of dead or stuck pixels. No sales outlet or manufacturer wants to discuss that problem.

Two years ago when I bought an 18inch LCD monitor from Gateway there were two stuck pixels right in the middle of the screen. IF they had been on the margins no problem but they were right on the level with center vision on the screen. Gateway was at first reluctant but when they understood the placement of the stuck pixels they backed down, and sent me a new one.

There have been some really good deals on HD Plasma screens. TigerDirect has had some very good deals on several HD models as well as some higher end models, including Pioneer, and some outstanding deals on EDTV units to. I have learned to consider the HD and the ED issue in addition to contrast and brightness levels. Personally I am leaning toward either a Pioneer or Panasonic plasma screen, for the living room. (An early Christmas gift to me.)

Most of the better plasma screen appear to be rated at MTF of 50,000 or more hours. Nearly everyone lists this figure so look for it. some of the cheap units are for 30,000 hours, but that is still a lot of TV viewing. So, I would not let that be too much of an issue. Also TigerDirect, Best Buy, and several others offer various extended warranties. If the price is not too severe you may want to consider one of the total coverage packages that include accidential damage, premature panel burnout, etc. I am not a strong supporter of extended warranties normally, but right now it can be a huge problem on getting repair for these units, the extended warranty gives you some leverage, plus most of the big manufacturers Panasonic, Pioneer, etc. sell extended warranties too so check the price.

I am buying a plasma screen in the next couple of weeks. I have researched the issues for about a year now and they are clearly better than a year ago, and prices are much better too. Most of the remarks about early failure and things like re-charging are just non-sense, and urban legend.
