Proprietary parts and cheaply/poorly designed electronics (that fail and need replacing) make money for the manufacturers- pure and simple. If they made a perfect item and any other maker could supply the replacement parts- well, that wouldn't be "good business" would it? Same goes for making a great piece of hardware that never failed and therefore never needed replacing...no money in that, apparently.

The reality is that we, as consumers, just keep taking it. No mass letters of complaint, no mass boycotts- no reason for a change as far as the junk peddlers are concerned. Until there's a true, mass outcry against this sort of thing, it will continue as-is.

If you really want to make a change- write actual letters- not emails- and complain. Not letters to techie-forums, but thoughtful, well-spoken letters to the maker of the product you feel is substandard. I do this, and you'd be surprised to find that some companies really do take notice. Likewise, I take the time to compliment items I find that deserve praise- it works both ways.
