AGREE!!!
I so agree with everything here - except maybe the video card stuff. You don't have to spend that much on a video card, especially if you're not playing games.

Personally, I don't see games as being any worse than TV. People will pour a lot of money into TVs and home theater systems as well.

Other than that - totally agree with this article, and agree with most of the talkback comments so far. There are simply way too many varieties of plugs, sockets, and various types of connectors, and companies ignoring existing standards make it even worse.

. . . and while we're on AC adapters - quit making the transformer part of the plug itself!!! There's no reason why every device I own should cover 3-5 power outlets on my power strip. Either place it in the center of the cord, or if your device is large enough, simply do the conversion in the device itself. Don't give me a big block plug that makes half of my power strip useless.

And you are so right about LCD screens!! I had a laptop, and it was totally useless in sunlight. Totally. Didn't matter what the angle was, I always got glare that overpowered the screen at any brightness level. That's crazy.

You are right about those printers also - they do seem to have degraded quite a bit these days. I am amazed how horrible they are now!!

-A printer should not choke on more than one sheet of paper. C'mon - we've have the technology to do a good job at separating paper for years, and today's printers can't do it anymore? I can't believe it.

-The software on the printer should not force you to change inks early. My parents' newest printer does this. It's far worse than the reminders - it simply refuses to print at all if the ink is low, even though we could probably squeeze out a few more pages. That's totally uncalled for.

-Inkjet printers should do a lot more to avoid streaking. Cartridge cleaning is a joke these days. Despite the claims of the manufacturers, inkjets simply are not up to the task of printing photos. Just finding a cartridge that doesn't streak is an almost futile effort.

All of this time to evolve their printers, and they cannot fix these basic problems? Do people really have to pay so much extra just to get a printer that doesn't jam or streak? Should my parents really be putting one page at a time into their printer? That's insane. Totally insane.

"Just print the darn page and leave us alone."

AMEN!

Frankly, my next printer is going to be a small color laser. It'll cost more upfront and probably be a bit larger than an inkjet in physical size, but in the end I'll probably save a lot of money and the insanity that plagues inkjets right now.
