To get on the network, there's software and instructions, including anti-spam and anti-virus, for Windows by kernel, for Macs, for ... Windows and Macs.

And then for course materials, some schools specify that versions of Office older than x may not suffice.
Active x provides so many capabilities, why should you demand the poor students do without?

And then there are the Windows/Mac specific software programs required for certain courses. In some cases, those will be available at labs, but of course without the right machine and software she'll be tied to a certain room on the campus for as long as it takes.

All that to avoid the World's operating system, whose ease of use and concern for the user are well documented. The considerate brother would want nothing else for a new matriculant.
