He has a heart
SuSE 9.1 I could hardly consider a "techie" system. I liked it a lot for my personal computers at home, reminded me a bunch of windows. However, the majority of college online services are now done in a browser environment. So its platform indepedent. If your talking about file sharing and such, won't be a problem there either. Reference materials should be written in an open standard through the browser, but if there is active x crap in there the IT staff at the school should be taken out back and flogged.

SuSE 9.1 even looks cooler then WinXP. easy to use interface too, and you hardly if ever have to use a command prompt. No virus's so he won't have to go and keep trying to clean those up. I think he will have less maintence with the SuSE machine.
